Making energy improvements to your home not only benefits the environment but can also bring financial advantages through tax credits. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has expanded the credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses, making it a lucrative opportunity for homeowners. In this guide, we'll explore the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and the Residential Clean Energy Credit, helping you determine eligibility and maximize the benefits for your home.
Who Can Claim the Credits: Homeowners improving their primary residence have ample opportunities to claim credits for qualifying expenses. Additionally, renters and owners of second homes used as residences may also be eligible. It's important to note that the credits are not available for improvements made to homes not used as residences.
Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: Qualifying expenses for this credit include exterior doors, windows, skylights, insulation materials, central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, biomass stoves, boilers, and home energy audits.
The credit amount is a percentage of total improvement expenses:
2022: 30%, up to a lifetime maximum of $500
2023 to 2032: 30%, up to a maximum of $1,200 (with separate annual limits for heat pumps, biomass stoves, and boilers)
No lifetime limit from 2023 onwards
Residential Clean Energy Credit: Qualifying expenses for this credit include solar, wind, and geothermal power generation, solar water heaters, fuel cells, and battery storage (beginning in 2023). The credit amount is a percentage of total improvement expenses:
2022 to 2032: 30%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit
2033: 26%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit
2034: 22%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit
By understanding and leveraging these tax credits, homeowners can make environmentally friendly improvements to their homes while enjoying financial benefits.
